The words in I Samuel 10 struck me today. The Ammomites acted on the assumption that David came to assess them, for potential attack, when in fact, David came to offer his condolences for their king’s death. The result of the Ammonites assumption was a major battle, with many lives lost. How often do we make false assumptions, causing ourselves and others irreparable consequences, simply because we did not see more information, to learn the truth? I can think of so many applications, large and small. I know, for myself, I need to accept that I may not ever know why someone did something I didn’t like, or don’t agree with, but that doesn’t mean their decision was meant to do me harm. In fact, often, it is probably egocentric of me to think that. Rather, I need to focus on the logs in my own eyes, not the splinters I see in theirs.
